Knowing one

On a day when everything seems pointless, the future a meal gone bad, we must not close our eyes for the little pieces of pure beauty that run into our life. I met a wonderful stranger. A young woman, a photographer countless miles from home.

Racing and torturing oneself

I am sitting here, feeling exhausted after my training of today. My lungs and stomach feel irritated, the rest of the body tired. The mind feels satisfied though. Yesterday I did an interval training, with 12 sprints. After 8 sprints saliva dripping on my shirt. Especially the last sprints were awful. After each sprint I was out of breath, heaving and bowing my head to the left, as if it would stop the ‘pain’. Why on earth would one torture oneself like this?

Life enhancers

The Things that enhance life: The Sun. The Partner. The Means. The Competition. The Cooperation. The Music.

Obsessed with supernaturalism

Gods, sons of Gods, rituals and a feeling of being connected to the bigger whole, on this planet to the community and outside of this planet to an omnipotent man with a beard. Supernaturalism is man’s favourite irrationality. One he defends with his life if pressed. The truth may come in many forms, but not when it comes to the raîson d’etre.

Climate in Maastricht

Note: This article was published in 2008, but rewritten recently

I have put some data in Excel and analysed the climatic conditions in Maastricht, the Netherlands, over the period 1957 – 2007. Maastricht has a mild climate with equally wet summers as winters. Winters are darker than summers as it is cloudier and there are less daily hours of sunshine. Added: sunshine duration comparison between Maastricht and Madrid.

Carmen

All I did was staring in your eyes and begging my brain for more questions. I wonder whether you have mistaken me for someone you would be working with. You told me where you were from, where you had been working. And you shook my hand softly and said: “I am Carmen.” I think I replied with: “My name is Michel.” But I might as well have said: “I am overwhelmed, in love, charmed. Nice to meet you.”

Summer in the city!

Last Monday the thermometer struggled to cross the 15 degrees threshold as rain poured down. Now one week later the temperature is playing with the 30 degrees barrier. These improved weather conditions are a great opportunity to go out and shoot some pictures. So I did. Below you will find a few. Note that the [...]

Sunshine…

It’s been some time since I posted the last time. I am little… out of shape. Inspiration is lacking. In the meantime have been playing with colours of this blog, changed some spacing at the bottom… but I guess you have not noticed. :) I feel an urge to perfect the looks, but every time I realise that my skills are rather limited (and I do not feel like improving them either). Well, it is just a blog… I am telling myself to get off my own back… Apparently, some of you noticed that I am not writing anymore… as I started receiving proposals / ideas. Thanks! :)

Speedbird stroking the fence

After a British Airways 777 jet avoided demolishing the perimeter fence, ploughed the grass and kissed the tarmac at London Heathrow airport on Thursday, I was reminded again of the dangers of flying. Of course, statistically flying is one of the safest means of transport. Only about 750 people were killed in an accident related to flying in 2007. Worldwide that is. And then, even most of the accidents take place in regions were flying is obviously less safe. Still, do you prefer overshooting a soaking wet runway in Sao Paulo or two flamed out engines in London. Flying is safe, as long as you are not on that plane that has a curse on it.

One year of photography

Now that I have changed cameras, after one year of using the Panasonic LS2, I decided to put the best pictures in one overview. This overview does not include the few pictures I took with my new camera, the Panasonic FZ8. They are grouped in chronological order, i.e. the oldest ones first.
