Yesterday I made another short trip. This time I went to visit my flat mate Jeroen and his girl friend in Brussels. Just like my journey to Paris two weeks ago, it had been quite a while since I visited Brussels. Actually the last time I was on a trip, I went there. Over three years ago. I got to see the new train station in Liege (where I had to change trains). It was being constructed back then.
I am experiencing some parts of life again. Just like a child who is adapting to a new world around him. Travelling all alone by train. It felt as if I had not been doing anything else. Quite normal. At the same time I was a little nervous, as I was when I was in Paris. There was a time I had to flee trains. I am lucky to have gotten my guts together again. I liked seeing Brussels Airport, exactly where I had been taking pictures with my brother half a year ago.
It was a pleasure to travel over the high speed rail tracks again. We were actually overtaken by a high speed Thalys train, which was a first timer for me. Yes, I am a child when it comes to these things. I can be very spontaneous. It was overtaking us with a speed differential of about 100 km/h, making it hard for me to figure out if it was overtaking us or just passing. I love travelling by modern trains. I also discovered Liege VOR, but I guess none has a clue what I am talking about and why it has caught my attention anyway…
Brussels was… Brussels. Very nice city. Not very big, but city-like. Quite different from Maastricht. More people moving around. Beautiful people. Good to see. Jeroen’s apartment looked very nice, though the neighborhood appeared rather… dangerous? I did not take my camera, as I am still waiting for my carrying bag to protect it. I missed some good photo opportunities… which is a pity. I made one (disappointing) picture with my phone, which can be found in the 2008 album.
Trains? I also like to travel by train – but only when it’s fast, comfortable and on time :)
Train travel, however, particularly long distance (100+ km), doesn’t seem to be cheap in many countries in Western Europe. Often, if you already have a car and travel twosome or more, it would actually be cheaper to drive than take the train.
There are the occasional strikes too :) I need to travel next week to France and Germany and I pray they won’t be striking again :)
